Taeyoung Lee is a professor in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at The George Washington University, with a courtesy appointment in Computer Science. He directs the Flight Dynamics and Control Laboratory and joined GW in 2011 after serving on the faculty at the Florida Institute of Technology. He earned his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering and M.S. in Mathematics from the University of Michigan in 2008.
His research brings differential geometry and applied mathematics to control, estimation, optimization, and artificial intelligence for robotics and aerospace systems. His work spans mathematical theory, computational methods, and experimental validation through UAV flight experiments, with interests including geometric control, uncertainty propagation on manifolds, and geometry-informed learning.
He is the lead principal investigator of an AFOSR Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) developing theoretical and computational foundations for open hybrid dynamical systems (2023–2028).
